Freedom And Justice
Greetings from the Freedom and Justice Division of the Baptist World Alliance!
Our mandate is to work for justice, freedom and peace and to inspire all those who are committed to God's Kingdom to do the same.
Every week you will find new information on this page concerning human rights issues and situations in which the rights of individuals and groups are being violated in different parts of the world. As we share this news, we invite you to both join us in prayer for these situations to change and in actions of solidarity and advocacy.
One of our goals as we share information is to facilitate the networking of Baptists who are already engaged in human rights matters worldwide. We also desire to raise awareness about the need for all Christians to incorporate a serious concern for the dignity of all life as an integral part of our mission as followers of Jesus Christ.
Please see the other information below about the various aspects of BWA’s Freedom and Justice Ministry including Human Rights Day, United Nations and our Resources.
We encourage you to share your experiences. If you have a resource, prayer request, a story of injustice, a report on human rights progress that you would like to share, please email fandj@bwanet.org.
The BWA General Council voted that the Division on Freedom and Justice will be comprised of four commissions - Religious Freedom, Peace, Social & Environmental Justice, and Human Rights Advocacy.
For more than twenty years, the Baptist World Alliance has encouraged Baptist congregations around the world to observe Human Rights Day. The date coincides with the anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights which was adopted on December 10, 1948.
The BWA has produced several freedom and justice-related resources.
United Nations
The BWA is a non-governmental organization in consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council and a member of the Conference of Non-Governmental Organizations in Consultative Relationship with the United Nations. Obtained in 1974, consultative status gives the BWA a higher level of access to all parts of the UN and the privilege of circulating its views to the General Assembly and the various commissions.
This award is given for significant and effective activities to secure, protect, restore or preserve the human rights as they are stated in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights or in other declarations on human righs.
